Ecuador truly is a great place to live. My wife and I live in Cotacachi, a town increasingly popular with expats, and we love the climate and low cost of living. Definitely worth considering if you are looking for a slower pace of life.

Hey Jetsetters, please don't mislead people. There have not been $70 daily rates since Egon Oldendorff booked people in their tramp ships. The going rate today is between €85 and €110 per day, plus port taxes etc on some ships. That's $125 to $165 a day so your estimates are way off (like half what they should be). Please don't mislead people as this will only lead to them being disappaointed when they can't get such cheap rates.

"Do fully charge everything. We’re not talking about credit cards, but rather electronics. Your cell phone, laptop, iPod, and PDA are your lifeline when you’re on the road."

I'll vouch for this. I got stranded whilst on a business trip a while back, can't remember if it was the ash cloud or the BA strikes but either way, I had checked out, only to find that that my flight was amongst those cancelled.

And then my laptop died because I hadn't had the sense to charge it. I was on the way back, do I didn't think I'd need it. Fortunately, my iPhone had charge, so I managed to book myself into serviced apartments but I could have been facing a lot of faff trying to get the airline to put me up.

Stay tuned for our February interview with novelist and offshore banking expert, Robert Landori. It should be live by the third week in February. We'll have Jason address your comment to Robert if possible. Thanks!

Are you guys being realistic when you say you can motor home around the country for $2000 to $3,000 per month, that it should be enough. Please don't mislead people like some sites are doing, about retireing early and just putting your money in some S&P etf, and going about your jolley way, you get people in alot of trouble.
This is very mis leading, there are several factorsto take into condiseration.
Inflation for one, if you are happly motoring around the country and gas prices north of $5.00 per gallon, well your motor home that is drinking gas at 8 to 10 miles per gallon may not tkae you to far. Insurance on the motor home as well as property taxxes, and your health insurance are also factors to consider in the inflation context. Not to mention, the cost of camp grounds and vecchial maintence.
As to these investment websites, saying just toss your money in the S&P ETF, and go about your merry way look at the return over the last 10 years then subtract 4% withdrawls every year over that period, and you should get the idea, of that return, there burning capital.
Just make sure you are well funded 2 to 3 million, or stay at he job.
Good Luck and Beware of overly zealous retire early web sites.
I am 61 and have been retired for 23 years. I have travelled the world, lived in Mexico, Guatemala, Thailand, Texas, Florida. Have traved to Greece, Italy, Jamica, and sailed through the Caribe, Africa, and others. My net worth with withdrawls subtracted as tripled in that time, that said I started with a high net worth, so be careful, trying to make scraping by.
Good Luck to all

Everyone has 4 paths to becoming an expat, some easier, some riskier, and some more fun.

Those four ways are:
1. School (exchange student, study abroad, enroll in a int'l school)
2. Government (diplomatic corps, military, other TLA agency)
3. Corporate (getting transferred in same company or new job)
4. Pack, fly, ask questions later.

There's so much information out there, it's easier and easier to "expat yourself" :-)
